Frequently Asked Questions About HipHop Lessons

You might be thinking about starting dance lessons, but questions like “What’s the best age to start?” or “How much does it cost?” can cause some concerns.

From here, we’ll go into detail to help clear up those worries and give you the information you need!

What is Hip-Hop Dance?

In the 1970s, dancing to Hip-Hop music became popular in the United States.

There is no strict definition of Hip-Hop dance—basically, it is dancing to Hip-Hop music, which is a music genre in itself.

Because there are no set rules, Hip-Hop dance is free, creative, and accessible for anyone to try!

Hip-Hop Dance at Gravis

Hip-Hop has become popular as a children’s activity, with classes for kids increasing and even becoming part of middle school curricula.

At Gravis, where cheer dance is the main focus, our Hip-Hop classes not only help children develop a sense of rhythm with modern beats but also teach them to immerse themselves in their passion and experience working together as a team, just like in cheer dance.

What Are the Benefits of Learning Dance?

In the field of developmental psychology, the positive effects of dance on children’s brains are attracting attention.

Through dance, children can fully express their natural desire to “move” and “play,” while also developing essential life skills such as self-control, self-expression, communication, and resilience.

In Japan, the national curriculum guidelines are revised every 10 years. In the latest revision, the focus is not only on what children learn, but also on how they learn and what they are able to do as a result. The goal is to foster children’s “zest for living” in a holistic way.

Dance was added to school physical education classes because it helps enhance this very “zest for living.”

Additionally, the physical education curriculum highlights the development of coordination skills, which consist of the following seven abilities:

①Differentiation ability (control of objects and body movements)
②Orientation ability (awareness of space, distance, and timing)
③Adaptability (quickly switching movements depending on the situation)
④Reaction ability (responding quickly to signals or cues)
⑤Rhythmic ability (moving in sync with timing and rhythm)
⑥Balance ability (maintaining physical stability)
⑦Coupling ability (coordinating the whole body smoothly)

These coordination skills are not only useful for dance but also for other sports, communication, and even academic performance.

At Gravis, many parents have shared their experiences, saying things like:

  • “My child’s athletic ability has improved.”
    “They’ve become less shy.”
“They don’t give up easily anymore.”

What Age Can Children Start Learning Dance?

The starting age for dance lessons depends on each school and class, so it’s best to first check the school’s website for age requirements or contact the school directly.

At Gravis, classes are available starting from preschool age (3 years old as of April 1).

From the perspective of brain science, different areas of the brain reach their developmental peaks at different times, and it’s said that starting lessons around age 3 is highly recommended.

Generally, children experience rapid growth in motor skills between ages 9–12, known as the “Golden Age”—a period when learning new movements is at its peak. The years 4–8 are referred to as the “Pre-Golden Age.”

During this Pre-Golden Age, it’s especially effective for children to try different types of physical activities, discover what truly interests them, and find something they can be passionate about.

That way, by around age 9, they can dive into more focused training with a strong foundation already in place.

How Much Does It Cost to Take Dance Lessons?

The main costs involved in children’s dance lessons typically include:

  • Initial fees (such as admission or registration fees)
Lesson fees (monthly tuition or class tickets)
Performance fees (for recitals or showcases)

As a general guide, the monthly tuition for a dance school is usually around $100–$200.

When it comes to recital or performance costs, the amount can vary significantly depending on the school and the style of dance.

Common expenses may include:

  • Participation fees
    Costume fees
Ticket fees (if parents are required to purchase a certain number)

In total, recital costs often range from $200 to $500.

For classical ballet recitals, however, expenses can sometimes exceed $1,000 per performance, depending on the school.

Features

■ Over 150 Cheer Dance Classes across Tokyo and Kanagawa!

■ One of the largest in Japan with over 2,500 students enrolled!
From preschool classes for children as young as 3 years old to competitive teams, we provide programs for every level.

HipHop Class Lesson Flow

■ Before the Lesson
Before the class officially starts, children prepare themselves by organizing their belongings and getting ready for the lesson. We encourage them to handle this independently.

■ <5 min> Greeting, Attendance, and Goal Setting
At Gravis, each class is called a “team.” Before the lesson, children enjoy some free playtime. Once class begins, everyone gathers in a circle, greets each other cheerfully, checks attendance, and shares the goals and focus of the day’s lesson.

■ <15 min> Recreation, Warm-up, and Stretching
We begin with fun recreational activities, followed by warm-ups and stretching to prepare the body.

■ <15 min> Ballet Basics, Strength Training, and Across-the-Floor Drills
Students practice essential foundations for dance: ballet basics, strength training, and across-the-floor drills such as turns and jumps. Difficulty is adjusted depending on the class level.

■ <20 min> Dance Routine Practice
Each team works on its choreography—learning, practicing, and polishing the routine. By the end, students aim to complete about a one-minute performance piece as a team.

■ End of Lesson
Just like at the beginning, everyone gathers in a circle. We review the day’s lesson, share feedback, confirm homework or practice goals for the next class, and finish with a closing greeting.

At Gravis, each lesson has clear objectives and is shared between instructors and students. This structure helps students stay focused and fully engaged throughout the class!

Lesson Fees

At Gravis, lessons are generally offered on a monthly tuition basis rather than single, drop-in lessons.

The reason is that cheer dance is not an activity where students can dramatically improve in just one class.

Consistent lessons help students build a strong foundation, which is essential before moving on to more advanced skills.

In addition, through regular attendance, children learn the importance of teamwork—one of the greatest appeals of cheer dance—while growing alongside their teammates.

That said, we do offer per-lesson payment options for students who:

  • Join in the middle of a month, or
  • Wish to take an additional class in another style or category.

We also have a make-up lesson system, so if you need to miss a class, you can attend on another day with peace of mind.

Annual Schedule

At Gravis Los Angeles, we not only participate in local community events but also host in-studio showcases!

Practice for the showcase is carried out during regular lessons. Regardless of whether students choose to perform or not, each class sets its own goals and works together as a team toward them.

Here’s a simple overview of our annual schedule ♪

First ~2 months of the new school term
Students focus on building their foundation while learning choreography, and begin preparing routines for upcoming events.
We also take part in community events and hold our annual Gravis Halloween Party!
Note: The schedule may be adjusted at the start of a new school year.

Next ~2 months after starting routine practice
During this period, we plan to participate in events. Details will be announced once confirmed.

Next ~2 months after events and new class formation
Classes are reorganized, and with their new teams, students begin practicing for the annual showcase.

The highlight of the year!!
We hold our annual showcase performance, where each class presents the results of their year-long practice. Students and instructors put their hearts into preparing for this big day!

Teaching Philosophy

Gravis believes in “increasing the number of people who can take on challenges in life through dance.”

Not only do children learn flexibility, rhythm, and dance skills, but also teamwork, communication, and life skills.

Summary

We introduced the Gravis Los Angeles Torrance HipHop Class for children starting from preschool age.

If your child is looking for a new activity, why not try with us?

Our experienced instructors look forward to welcoming you!

Let’s have fun and dance cheerfully together♪
